Why do you think so many people in our society see happiness in purely material terms? (write your own resp. first, then comment/ bounce others'.)

  1. Because that's what the media portrays happiness as. And people go and live it out.

  2. People in our society see happiness in purely material terms, because they think that the more they have the more comfortable they live. People in our society believe that comfort is happiness, because being uncomfortable generally makes people unhappy.

  4. People attain happiness in different ways, some can be happy solely on who they surround themselves with or things they do. Some people have insecurities, most of which make them unhappy. When these material items come in it makes up for whatever brings them down. For them fora second it doesn't exist anymore. Whether its their new shoes new clothes to make them feel better about the way they look. Or for others its more about something that can just take them away from their life for a little. That iPod that drowns out the sounds of the world, or the laptop that passes the time on boring days.

  5. People in our society see happiness in purely material terms because they aren't happy with themselves. They use material things to replace the hurt or pain that happen in their life that they might not feel comfortable discussion.

  6. @ksmith. I agree with you about that, I think people need to change the way they look at things. And get their priorities in check if you know what I mean?

  10. In our society, people want to have what they cant afford. This is why so many people are in dept, because all they worry about is what they physically have. People should spend more time with their family, where happiness isn't bought but created.

  11. @A. Mac, i kno exactly what you mean,

  12. @ aUhler Agreed i forgot to say that in mine, its like the more someone has the easier their life is the easier their life is the less they have to do, the less they have to do the more they want.

  13. So many people in society see happiness in material terms because that's what everything that surrounds us is all about. There are always new things coming out to replace the old. People think that if they don't have best that society will look at them in a less way. People are always worried about how the people around them look at them, this plays a big roll in happiness. I think that everyone should focus on the non-materialistic things in life and stop worrying about what other people think.

  14. I think people in our society can see happiness in anything they choose. Some people might like to be alone and be happy but others might like to be with someone.

  15. Many people in our society see happiness in purely material terms because they feel that's what they should have. As humans we want to be the best and to be the best we feel we should have nothing but the best. the truth is, not many of us can afford material things but some of us will find away to have it, even if it means putting a gun at someone head to get it one way or another.

  16. Many people see happiness in material things because they make life easier for them. Almost no one wants to do something the hard way. Take the GPS for example, drivers use them instead of maps because using a map takes brain power. You have to figure out where you are, where you want to go, and then how to get there verses just typing in a location and having a computer figure it out for you. Aggravation is another reason, people in general get annoyed over the smallest of things and inconveniences. People want the easy way out. Materials give them that opportunity and with our technology advancements we have materials for almost everything.

  17. @CDavids. I totally agree with you on the fact about "Technology is taking away peoples actual idea of happiness". With all these new Computers, ipods, phones, and video games being created kids/ teens are missing out on the opportunities that life has to offer.

  18. People see happiness in purely material terms because it's what there use to. People grew up understanding happiness is about this. Materials make up the society it has turned into what you have or should have and a persons happiness now relies on that. Even though so many people see happiness with what they have things keep changing and people rely on getting the new thing and if they don't there not happy. Seeing happiness purely in material terms is just part of life now.

  19. So many people see happiness in material items because that's what they resort to if they can't find happiness in other things like family, school, etc. People substitute material items for happiness.

  20. cpoineau, I agree with your statement.

  21. @Cdavids I agree but some people just don't have that support from family or whatever the case may be and turn to things like food, shopping, and relationships. In the result of that people just get even more depressed. Its just a cover up of reality

  22. So many people in our society see happiness from material terms because our society is dependent on materials to satisfy our needs, such as cell phones, computers and etc. From watching commercials and reading ads pressuring us to buy more products, or from having friends with new products and that would pressure me into buying one for myself to satisfy my need.

  23. @A. Mac. I deleted my first post but I'll post if again. Technology is taking away people's idea of happiness.

  24. @Kchancey. I totally agree with you when you said "It's just a cover up of reality."

  25. People in society see happiness in material terms because there is a lot of new technology out now that people want to get their hands on. There are so many things you can do with electronics that make people feel on top of the world. It should make you happy, but your life shouldn't rely on it. It may make it easier, but you need more than devices to make you happy. People need meaning in their life and goals to strive for. People believe that getting the new phone or game makes them satisfied with their life. They didn't push to make themselves happy, they tried to buy happiness. It may make people happy for a certain amount of time, but that happiness fades in time. True happiness is reached through hard work and ambition.

  26. @plora I agree with what you said. Right now, my family is in a crisis because my parents wanted to buy everything for the house at once, and they spent more than what they make. Now my parents are struggling really hard to pay off their debt, but with the economy, things are only getting harder.

  27. @Kchancey i agree with your statment "it's a cover up of reality". Your completely right people depend on material items when they don't have the kind of support they need from the people that surround them. They think having the best things out there will draw attention to themselves.

  28. @Kchancey i agree with all of your posts

  29. CDavids, I agree with what you said about people resorting to materialistic items if they can't find happiness and it being there substitution.

  30. @mjoaquino i agree with you, like with the new cell phones that come out everyone automatically wants one. I would add that people think it's the best thing at that time even though some turn out that the new product does not work as well as they are advertised.

  31. So many people in our society see happiness as purely material terms because the media portrays happiness as a person who has a lot of money or a lot of material items, and people take that as the way to live.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think that people in our society find happiness in material items are just being human. Never have i ever witnessed someone get a brand new phone or latest ipod an not be happy. **Now if someone gave you a choice to read a book or listen to music on an ipod touch, which would you choose** I know I'm going with a touch

  33. @RBertolotti i agree with your statement. When i read it i thought of the saying, "Money does not buy happiness."

    ReplyDelete
  34. @RBertolotti I agree when you said "its a lot of technology that people want to get their hands on". People feel as if they need the best, new thing to just show off and say they got.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @STnead, I agree. People think you have to have the life of a celebrity in order to be happy.

    ReplyDelete
  36. @AMac. I agree with what you said about how the media portrays happiness in material terms. That is what commercials and other advertisements want you to think now a days. Advertise companies want people to believe buying an item makes their life complete. Objects don't give people lifetime happiness, goals being accomplished do.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @KMeckes i agree with you 100%. We all try to out do each other and with everything new that continues to come out everyone wants that new item. There are so many materials and we think we need them to survive because that's the way we live. We are so dependent on the material items to survive.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @PHess I agree with you. The material items make people stop feeling insecure about themselves and it is the base of their happiness.

    ReplyDelete
  39. @RBertolotti. You're right, objects don't give people lifetime happiness. You can have all the money, and all the things in the world and still not be happy. So why focus on those things so much? I say we should all set goals like you said. And once we accomplish them set new ones so we never settle. Because when you settle that's when you begin to take the things you have for granted.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @PHess, i also agree with your statemet"the material things make people stop eeling insecure about themselves and is the base of their happiness"

    ReplyDelete
  41. @AUhler. I agree with you about how you think objects make people comfortable in their life. It may make people happy with what they have, but how long can that last. Maybe people need to feel some discomfort, so you know what its like. How long can you stay with the same comfortable lifestyle. It may start to get old.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @PHess Yes these new items do take people away from reality but i think thats the reason why people are happy when using their favorite possesion

  43. Bertolotti: I couldn't have stated it any better: "People need meaning in their life and goals to strive for....and that "True happiness is reached through hard work and ambition. "

  44. Most of you agreed with each other and only few contended another's post or insight. I promise you a more challenging, argumentative discussion on the next blog.
